Features

Winkle aims to be a simple, elegant tool for writing a novel and exporting it to ebook format. Here are some main features of Winkle:

  • Autosave to selected directory/folder

  • Ebook export tool (export to EPUB, MOBI and IBOOK format)

  • Ebook preview panel (see how your ebook looks and edit it live)

  • Built-in dictionary/thesaurus

  • Notes panel (add notes throughout your work)

  • Tabbed notes (divide your work into Projects and Chapters)

  • Available for Windows only (and hopefully for Mac later on)

  • FREE to use (*donate to remove startup popup & export signature*)

Winkle is a writing app I have developed for myself because I was never fully satisfied with the software on the market today. Though apps like Scrivener and Ulysses III were my favorite, I still felt they had too many features I would never have to use or a user experience that lacked what I needed. Barebones, distraction-free writing apps that have become recently popular, are excellent for producing a rough draft of a novel but lack the features I need for editing later. I also found a lack of user-friendly methods of exporting your work into ebook format. My favorite is an app for Mac called Vellum, but since switching to Windows, I found my options limited.

There are many remarkable apps on the market today, but my app is not about the market. I am not trying to convince myself or anyone else that my app is the best, better than anything out there or that you need it. I just needed something to meet my needs and I had the opportunity to create it. By no means is the current version of Winkle perfect. It is still a work in progress. However, the result is a solution tailored to my needs as a writer. Perhaps my needs might correspond with yours. If so, give my app a try and let me know what you think or recommend it to others.

Winkle is free to use, with no restrictions on its features.

However, I do want to maintain and update the app with improved features. I also want to create a Mac version. That is why the free version of the app includes:

  • A donate popup that opens each time you launch the app, but can be closed with one click

  • A signature added to the very last page of any exported ebooks consisting of one line: “Created using the Winkle app | Get it free at www.samokish.ca”

If you support my app and donate a minimum of $1, you will receive a registration key which will deactivate the popup and signature. Plus, you will receive free updates in the future! But, you do not have to donate anything to use all the features of Winkle.

I will keep supporting Winkle over time regardless of the number of donations, but the more support I receive, the more time I can spend on its continued development and the more features I can add to it. Your input will also help me gauge just how useful my app has been. Even if no one downloads it or ever uses it, I will continue using Winkle for my own personal writing and continue supporting it.

Planned Features

I want to add certain features to Winkle over time without cluttering it up. Here is a list of possibilities that I think I might want to add (but please keep in mind that this list is subject to change at any time and I may not add any of them, depending on feedback/voting from users):

  • Interface customization (change color of text, menus, buttons, side panels, etc.)

  • Version history mode (explore and compare your complete editing history side by side)

  • Mind-mapping panel (to organize your plot or character development)

  • Expanded ebook customization and themes (more control over fonts and styling of the finished ebook)

  • Audio notes (record and attach an audio note at any point in your project)

  • Real-time editing – share projects with another Winkle user for editing (Authors rely on a professional editor to polish up their work before publishing. With this feature, you can share your project with an editor, track/approve any changes they make in real-time and export a completed, edited ebook seamlessly.)
